Refers to £15 donation from a Sunday School in Southampton towards the costs of a "native teacher" (see letter 29) and suggests that this be instead appropriated to the general objects of the Society, given the current difficulties in putting "native agency" into more extensive operation; speaks of his engagement to Mary, the eldest daughter of Robert Moffat, and arrangements for their union in January 1845; details considerations made in reaching his decision to get married; gives his opinions on the advantages of young missionaries coming into the field as single men in order to focus first on acquiring the language and becoming acclimatized, particularly where they can be under the guidance of older brethren; absence from Mabotsa to make arrangements for his forthcoming marriage; progress by Mr Edwards [Rogers Edwards] in the construction of a school [at Mabotsa]; instruction in the new school now commenced by Livingstone and Mebaloe, but irregularity of attendance; fluctuating attendance at services and the influence of the chief in ensuring a good meeting; discusses the influence of a rain maker and promises to furnish further information for the Juvenile Magazine; erection of a dwelling house - details size and materials used.
