Khushwant Singh was an Indian writer, journalist and lawyer. He was born in Hadali, Punjab [in modern-day Pakistan] in a Sikh family. He was educated at Government College, Lahore, St. Stephen's College, Delhi and King's College, University of London. He trained as a barrister-at-law at the Inner Temple, London and subsequently returned to British controlled India to practice in Lahore. Following Partition he joined the Indian Foreign Service, serving in Canada and the United Kingdom. In 1951, he joined the All India Radio as a journalist. He published a number of fiction works, including in 1956the acclaimed historical novel on Partition, 'Train to Pakistan'. Khushwant Singh worked as journalist in print media, becoming editor at 'The Illustrated Weekly of India', 'The National Herald', and the 'Hindustan Times'. Between 1980 and 1986 he was a member of the upper house of the Indian parliament. He died on the 20 March 2014. |
