Bhisham Sahni was a Hindi novelist, playwright and political activist. Born in Rawalpindi in August 1915 into a Hindu Punjabi family, he was educated at the Government College in Lahore and Khalsa College, Amritsar. He was an activist in the Quit India movement and was working for the Congress party at the time of Partiton. Travelled to Delhi in August 1947 to attend Independence celebrations and was unable to return. Between 1957 and 1963, he lived in Moscow and worked as a translator. In 1974 he published the novel 'Tamas' [Darkness], his acclaimed fictionalised account of Partition. Sahni was general secretary of the Progressive Writers Association. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for literature in 1998, and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 2002. Sahni died in July 2003. |
