Summary: |
This young Apatani man, standing near Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's camp site in the Apatani valley, is carrying both a hoe and a long pole : the wooden-handled and metal-bladed hoe was a highly-valued tool : Most hoes came from Assam although some were made by the few Apatani blacksmiths : It was used to turn the soil in high-lying fields where the earth hardened before the summer rain, to move earth and to repair bunds : the pole is one of two used when mixing soil in a flooded field : a man would support himself on these two poles while using his feet to churn the soil and water : He also wears a rain shield on his back : Made of bamboo and cane, it has a ‘shelf’ that can be used for carrying loads as well as flipped up to cover the head when it rains. |
