Summary: This photograph, of two Apatani men modelling a rain shield, was taken near Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's camp site in the Apatani valley : the bamboo and cane structure, with a flap to cover the head, was used when travelling or working in the open : another, similar structure, with a shelf on the bottom, had the additional function of being able to carry heavy loads : Both wear the cane belt common among most populations in the Subansiri region : However, the 'tail' of the cane belt visible on the man on the right indicates that these men are Apatanis.
