Arrival at Kuruman on 31 July [1841] and reception by Hamilton [Robert Hamilton] and Edwards [Rogers Edwards]; comments on the use of "native agency" as the most efficient mode of spreading the Gospel; describes the limited size of the population at Kuruman and in the immediate vicinity as an impediment "as far as very extended [mission] operations are concerned"; gives statistics regarding the size of the population in the surrounding area; indicates much larger populations farther to the north and north-east, including at Taons [Taung]; proposes accompanying Edwards on a journey into the interior, where he hopes to become better acquainted with the habits of the people and their language; proposes to take with them "two of the best qualified of our members here, for the purpose of planting them as native teachers in some promising locality..."; encouraged by the reception of the local people to the "efficacy of our medicines" and hopes to be able to put his skills as a medical man into practice.
