Summary: Importance of "native agency" in the work of evangelisation; his sense of the scale and nature of the country from his recent journey with Edwards [Rogers Edwards; about 700 miles in length the journey began on 18 October and lasted for about 6 weeks]; reports on the efficacy of the two "native agents" recently employed by the Mission and begs the sanction of the Directors for the employment of more; missionaries and candidates alike believe that "the tribes 250 miles northwards are in a much more favourable state for our object than those in the surrounding localities"; refers to cruelties to which the Interior peoples have been subjected in recent years by "marauders", including Mosilekatsi [Mzilikazi, called Moselekatse by the baTswana] and the resulting anxiety in these areas to obtain an alliance with Europeans; advances being made by the Boors [Boers] of Port Natal into the centre of the Continent and towards the North-East; calls the Directors attention to the BaKhatla [baKgatla] as a possible focus for a new Mission in the Interior.
