Details of journey to the Interior with Edwards [Rogers Edwards] to a distance of 250 miles north, being "further than any missionaries have yet been", and reception by those they encountered; relates opposition to the Gospel observed near to existing mission stations; accounts for friendly reception of Europeans farther afield, but the change rapidly being engendered by encounters with traders and Griqua people - in particular the transmission of "the diseases of Europeans" (including venereal disease) and the purchase of guns; discusses the use and benefits of "native agency" in the work of evangelisation, although contrasting the likely reception of "native teachers" in Africa with the experience of the London Missionary Society in the South Sea Islands; observations of the Griqua Town missionaries; progress of two "native agents" employed by Robert Moffat, the consequence of which has been "a large accession to the church"; makes a direct appeal to the Directors along with Mr Edwards and Mr Hamilton [Robert Hamilton] for the employment of more such agents in Africa; relates excellent qualities of Mr Edwards as a Sicuana [seTswana] scholar and preacher. |
