JANUARY Air raids on London and Berlin; local walks limited by military presence; meetings on St Felix business, of P&O directors and at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) to meet staff members Morrison and Fenwick 'who managed to escape last October & after a perilous trek across China in 20 days reached Chungking.' 29. FEBRUARY London University Court and St Felix Council meetings; considering resigning the former. 'I grow deafer and duller. But I do not like to give in', 10; ill with influenza.APRIL Lady Addis writes following Addis's suspected heart attack on the progress of his illness. AUGUST Addis receiving X-ray treatment. OCTOBER Son John progressing in diplomatic service, 'I see an ambassadorial halo suspended above his head if he goes on as he has begun.' 29.
