JANUARY Addis 'asked to choose between London and Shanghai, ... both our hearts are crying out for London.' 11; the Addises had booked their passage to Shanghai but the illness of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) London manager, Sir Ewen Cameron, led to Addis's appointment to the London Office; to Berlin to discuss loan business and hard work in the London office on the loan with the experts Cameron in London and Julius Brssel in Hamburg, ill. FEBRUARY House hunting; to Paris to discuss Siamese loan; appointed Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) London office junior manager and also a director of the British and Chinese Corporation [British & Chinese Corporation] and the Chinese Central Railway [Chinese Central Railways]; very busy. MARCH Busy with Siamese and Japanese loans, both very successful; the crowds for the Japanese loan had to be controlled by the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) football team, having overcome the police but 'many enemies made owing to Mr Townsend's ignorance of old China friends of the Bank, whose applications have been refused.' 29. JULY Very busy with new Japanese loan. 'He signed some 300 cheques yesterday, and that is but a drop in the day's work,' 14; family to Bacton, Norfolk, until September, Addis joining them for weekends and a holiday in September. AUGUST Very overworked. SEPTEMBER In Norfolk, doing much sightseeing by bicycle. OCTOBER To Brussels to discuss modification of Anglo-German agreement; helps J.O.P. Bland formerly of Peking and Shanghai, to get appointment with the British and Chinese Corporation (B&C Corp.).; very busy, 'my railway work is now about the equal of what I do in the Bank', 19; makes well received toast to 'Our Guests' at China Association Dinner. DECEMBER Children ill with measles.
