G.S. Mackenzie to Col. E. Smith Informs that Sheikhs and Elders have accepted sum of $25 per head for run-away slaves. Is in process of paying owners. Asks Col. E. Smith to deal with owners residing outside IBEA Co.'s jurisdiction Requests that all missions be informed of new procedure.
G.S. Mackenzie to Col. Euan Smith Details of Rev. Price's confirmation of arrangements regarding runaway slaves. Later Rev. Price informed G.S. Mackenzie of mistakes in no. of such slaves at mission. The slaves intended to resist being returned to masters. To avoid trouble G.S. Mackenzie suggested to Hamid-bin-Suliman that the slaves be freed by purchase & money given to owners. Suggests Col. E. Smith issues permits for settlement at mission by freed slaves which would provide evidence in any later dispute. Still wants elected representative from IBEA Co. at mission.

Smith Full report on runaway slaves. 3 societies involved - (1) Church Mission Society, (2) United Methodist Free Church Society of Sheffield, (3) The German Evangelical Lutheran Mission in East Africa of Hersbruk Bavarici. All slaves questioned for details of ownership. Admires missionaries but finds they were misguided in their actions. Should be control over where missions set up. Acting illegally over slaves - bloodshed must be avoided. G.S. Mackenzie suggests young slaves be educated & that C.M.S. take control of all missions. Mentions again instituting a law fining Europeans harbouring slaves.
