Urvashi Butalia was born in 1952 in Ambala, Haryana. She gained a BA in Literature at Miranda House, Delhi University (1971), a MA in Literature at Delhi University (1973), and a MA in South Asian Studies at the University of London (1977). In 1984, Butalia and her partner Ritu Menon, co-founded Kali for Women, the first feminist publishing house in India. In 2003, following the closure of Kali for Women, she founded Zubaan Books.
Butalia has written as a columnist for Indian and international newspapers and magazines. She was the author of 'The Other Side of Silence: Voices from the Partition of India' (1998) - a consideration of the experiences of Partition in the Punjab, including role of violence against women, based on numerous interviews with survivors. |
