Admin history: Harkishan Singh Surjeet was born in 1916 in Ropawal, Punjab. In 1930 he joined the Naujawan Bharat Sabha [Youth Society of India] movement and was imprisoned by colonial authorities in 1932. Surjeet joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in 1936 and was a founder and leader of the Kisan Sabha [Peasants Union] in Punjab.
