Admin history: Dr Ashok Mitra was born in East Bengal into a Hindu family. He was a student at University of Dacca during 1947 and moved to India following Partition. He gained a Masters degree from the Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Ashol Mitra gained a PhD in economics in 1953 from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands, University of Rotterdam.
