Dr Ashok Mitra was born in East Bengal into a Hindu family. He was a student at University of Dacca during 1947 and moved to India following Partition. He gained a Masters degree from the Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Ashol Mitra gained a PhD in economics in 1953 from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands, University of Rotterdam. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Ashok Mitra was a member of staff at the UN Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East in Bangkok, Thailand and the Economic Development Institute in Washington, DC, United States. He later became Professors of Economics at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. He was the Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, and then Chairman of the Agricultural Prices Commission of the Government of India. He was Finance Minister of West Bengal from 1977-87. In the mid-1990s he became a member of Upper House of the Indian Parliament. He is close to the Communist Party (Marxist). |
