Daughter of a Walthamstow bookseller; joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in the mid-1930s (though never in the Communist Party of Inda). Joined the Free India League in London and worked as the unpaid secretary to Krishna Menon, the league secretary. Travelled to Amritsar in 1939 to visit her married sister.
