description |
Photographs taken during Alexander Sandilands' missionary work in Bechuanaland [Botswana]. Dates and numbers written on the reverse of the photographs by Ian Sandilands relate them to incidents in Alexander and Doris Sandilands' journey from Maun to Tiger Kloof by way of Livingstone which are described in Doris Sandilands' diary (see MS380813/1/1): "On the way to Kayungula after trekking 2-3 hours, a very welcome breakfast" [Doris Sandilands having breakfast in bush]; elephant tracks; "Two Mosarwa men and a Moshubia girl"; "Stuck in heavy sand" [wagon drawn by oxen]; "The wagon outspanned at Kachikau. Beside is the reed courtyard or 'lolwapa' which the people put up against our arrival" [Sandilands's wagon at Kachikau village]; view of lolwapa, Kachikau; Luke Modisa (evangelist-teacher) with family and friends, Kachikau; "A deaconess of the Kachikau church"; Alexander Sandilands and dog outside Kachikau church; "Cullen Reed's grave"; "The road just beside the grave"; "At Kavimba, close to Cullen Reed's grave; baobab tree; "Wagon run up against a tree by careless driving"; "The eggs we nearly ate for breakfast".
