This ritual takes place over several days in a shrine or a temple dedicated to local deities, many of whom are deified humans. The centrepiece is the dance of the medium who impersonates the deity and speaks to the crowd, which is what we see here, despite the poor exposure. The medium, dressed in a skirt of palm leaves is being decorated by others. This ritual, known as bhuta kola, is found in the Udupi and South Kannada districts. The patrons are Bunts and Billivas, and the perfomers come from three castes: Nalke, Pambada and Parava. |
