Summary: Fire-walking, or actually walking over hot ashes, is part of a large festival that takes place each year in the Udupi and South Kannada districts. It demonstrates the efficacy of the deity's power, as the walker claims to be protected by it. The festival is held at a shrine or a temple dedicated to local deities, many of whom are deified humans. The centrepiece is the dance of the medium who impersonates the deity and speaks to the crowd. He is seen here in the left foreground, with his back to the camera and dressed in a costume of palm leaves. The patrons are Bunts and Billivas, and the perfomers come from three castes: Nalke, Pambada and Parava.
