This is the famous standing Buddha image at Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. It is thought by some to represent the Buddha's first disciple, Ananda, but others believe it is an image of the Buddha himself. Seven metres tall, it is thought to have been created in the 12th or 13th century. We also see the head of the reclining Buddha (12th or 13th century), which shows him reaching his final nirvana at death. |
