A grant from the Rockefeller Foundation enabled him to study at the London School of Economics, under the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. In 1936, he went to the Naga Hills in northeast India for his first fieldwork; over the next four decades, he worked extensively in south & central India, northeast India and Nepal. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Anthropology at SOAS, where he established the Department of Anthropology. During his career, he published seventeen books, most of them ethnographies of tribal cultures. He was President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1975-77) and a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology.

520 | 3 | |a This portrait of a Nyishi man was taken near Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's camp site in the Apatani valley : He is Jorum Tacho, an influential man from the nearby Nyishi village of Jorum : Bringing gifts of rice-beer highly valued by Apatanis, chickens and eggs, he explained that a British officer, in 1926, had given him a piece of paper to present to any official : Unfortunately, the paper got burnt and he had come now to get another, similar document : He wears the typical cane hat, elaborate hair knot with skewer, metal string of beads on the hair line and metal loops hanging from wooden discs in his ear lobes : He also carries a machete with a cane-mesh handle : all of this might be seen on an Apatani man, too : Only the wooden ear plug with metal loop and style of hair knot are more distinctly Nyishi.
