Summary: |
Man squatting on the left is an Apatani shaman chanting during a ritual : He wears the shaman's special shawl, cloth headdress and cowrie shell-studded shoulder strap : Extending above his hair knot is a special piece of bamboo, worn only by shamans when conducting major ceremonies : this is probably a minor version of the Murung (Feast of Merit) feast known as Subu Taniin, during which one adult mithun or cow, and one calf are sacrificed : Normally held in January, this ritual may also be conducted in March, as part of the Myoko festival : the man squatting in the background between the two main figures, and chanting, is also a shaman : He and the other men on the platform, one of whom is drinking rice beer from a large bamboo mug, are assisting the main shaman. |
