Summary: In the centre, standing on the ritual platform, is Nani Kochi, an Apatani shaman : Standing to his left is another Apatani shaman, his assistant on this occasion : Nani Kochi wears the special shawl, large hoop earrings, head cloth and cowrie-shell shoulder strap that are part of the main shaman's costume : In his hand he holds a piece of special bamboo, which has been split, with pieces of ginger stuck on its tips : Chanting a long ritual text, he uses the bamboo piece to gesture toward one of two sacrificial animals cow and calf, tethered to the platform : another bamboo piece will be used to address the other animal : Known as subu padu, this day-long ritual confirms the eligibility of a man to sponsor a large feast Murung (Feast of Merit), in the future : On the far left is a tall pole, erected during another major ceremony Myoko, : the electricity pylon, further in the background, reminds us that this is an Apatani village in 1978.
