Summary: As this photograph shows, Apatanis live in compact villages and narrow houses approx : 12 x 4 metres and owned by nuclear families, in order to use every square metre of land for wet-rice agriculture : In 1978, when this photograph was taken, roofs were built primarily with split and flattened bamboo, whereas earlier thatch had covered the bamboo : By the turn of the twenty-first century, corrugated iron sheeting replaced the bamboo on most roofs.
