As this photograph shows, Apatanis live in compact villages and narrow houses approx : 12 x 4 metres and owned by nuclear families, in order to use every square metre of land for wet-rice agriculture : the houses we see here, in 1978, have changed little from those photographed in the 1940s : the roof no longer has thatch, the raised posts are shorter and the stairs have proper steps, as seen in the lower left hand corner : the split and flattened bamboo roof seen here later gave way to corrugated iron sheeting, which is now the preferred material. |
