Summary: As this photograph shows, Apatanis live in compact villages and narrow houses approx : 12 x 4 metres and owned by nuclear families, in order to use every square metre of land for wet-rice agriculture : Front and back porches, however, double the living and working space, and provide a public viewing gallery : We also see here a number of poles erected during the Myoko festival : Each ritual platform in a village has a pole approximately 15-20 metres high : the pole in the foreground appears to be one of these, although the ritual platform has been moved : Shorter poles in the background, are also put up near or on the porch of each house in which a boy has been born in the last three years, when the village last hosted the festival.
