Summary: This Apatani shaman is chanting as he stands on an animal skin on top of a small wooden stool placed on a ritual platform : He wears the special shawl, large hoop earrings, head cloth and cowrie-shell shoulder strap that are part of a shaman's costume : In his hand he holds two pieces of special bamboo, which have been split, with pieces of ginger stuck on its tips : Chanting a long ritual text, he uses the bamboo pieces to gesture toward the two sacrificial animals a cow and calf, tethered to the platform but not visible here : Known as subu padu, this day-long ritual is used to confirm the eligibility of a man to sponsor a large feast Murung (Feast of Merit), in the future : the bamboo mugs in front of him are used to drink rice beer : the children gathered to watch the photographer wear a mixture of traditional and modern clothes.
