Summary: |
Standing on the ritual platform is Nani Kochi, an Apatani shaman : He wears the special shawl, large hoop earrings, head cloth and cowrie-shell shoulder strap that are part of a shaman's costume : In his hand he holds a piece of special bamboo, which has been split, with pieces of ginger stuck on its tips : Chanting a long ritual text, he uses the bamboo piece to gesture toward one of two sacrificial animals cow and calf, tethered to the platform : another bamboo piece will be used to address the other animal : Known as subu padu, this day-long ritual confirms the eligibility of a man to sponsor a large feast Murung (Feast of Merit), in the future : there is little in this photograph that would date it to 1978, except the electricity pylon in the background. |
