These Apatani men wear the traditional hair style knot with skewer, and earrings small ring through a cane ring in the lobe, and two carry a machete : By 1970, when this photograph was taken, new fashions had arrived, however : all three wear the shorts that replaced a cane belt and cloth penis cover : two men right and left, also wear the red jacket given to 'village headmen' by the colonial and then the Indian government : the man on the right has a jungle cat's lower jaw and teeth attached to his shoulder strap : the man on the left has an official badge on his, with the insignia of the North-east Frontier Agency, which governed Arunachal Pradesh from 1954 to 1972 : the man in the centre wears a shirt bought in a shop and holds an umbrella. |
