Summary: This Apatani man is Nani Sala, one of the most powerful political leaders among Apatanis in the mid-twentieth century : He is standing on the airstrip where an airplane has arrived to take Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf and his wife back to Assam, after a two-week visit to the Apatani valley in 1962 : Nani Sala carries the traditional small knife hung around the neck, but he wears a 'modern' hat and one of the red coats given by the government to 'village headmen.' The scarf, while new in form and shape, is handwoven with the distinctly Apatani diamond design.
