This portrait of a Nyishi man, making an arrow, was taken near Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf's camp site in the Apatani valley : He wears the typical cane hat, cane belt, hair knot and metal string of beads on the hair line : all of this might be worn by an Apatani man, too, although the hair style would be slightly different : Only his wooden ear plugs, rough cotton tunic and the style of his bamboo quiver with a cane-mesh top are distinctly Nyishi or Hill Miri, : In his diary, Fürer-Haimendorf described this man as a 'very simple old man and not at all well-travelled....Two or three times a month he comes to Dutta village :, where he has an Apa Tani friend, and sells pots made by his wife for rice.' |
