These two Apatani men stand in front a ritual platform, made of hardwood planks raised on thick wooden posts : It is used for ritual performances, especially the Murung (Feast of Merit) festival : an Apatani village has several platforms, each of which is owned by a different clan or set of clans, : today, the wood is being replaced with concrete slabs and posts : In front of the platform stands a babo pole, cut from hardwood and approximately 15-20 metres high : It is is erected on or near a ritual platform during the annual Myoko festival : a smaller pole is also put up on the porch of every house in which a son was born during the previous three years the last time the village hosted the Myoko festival. |
