Summary: This thangka depicts Prince Siddhārtha, who was brought up in a royal palace near his birthplace in southern Nepal. Turning away from this life of luxury, he left home to become a wandering ascetic. His eventual enlightenment led to his recognition as Śākyamuni Buddha. This painting shows the heavy influence of Chinese style often displayed in Tibetan thangkas from the seventeenth century onwards which depict human beings not in a state of enlightenment. The subject adopts a three-quarter pose, with architecture, perspective and landscape details all ultimately influenced by Chinese models (Text by Philip Denwood, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
