Śākyamuni, the Buddha of the present world age, lived around the fourth century BCE in northern India. He is here portrayed against a landscape background with other Buddha figures in the sky and scenes from his life. The composition reflects the integration in Tibetan art of the iconic style of portrayal inherited from South Asia with the treatment of landscape derived from Chinese art, which was achieved by the fifteenth century and has continued to the present day. The dating of Tibetan thangkas is often difficult, but is aided in this piece by the Chinese silk brocade of the mount (Text by Philip Denwood, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor.
