The warp ikats of Madura are typically floral, with the motifs displayed against red, cream and blue-black ground divided into horizontal bands. The island of Madura, located just north of the east tip of Java and northwest of Bali, is also known for its fine wood-carving tradition and its fragrant jasmine. The textile was originally part of a tubular sarong made from two lengths of fabric woven by women on a back-strap loom. The colours, their soft hues an indication of age, would have been produced with plant dyes such as indigo, along with other natural substances found on the island. (Text by John T.
