Summary: The handwoven warp ikats of Sumba are well known for their use of large graphic motifs. In the past, the highly patterned ikats were woven only by noblewomen, and although they continue to be made on back strap body-tensioned looms, manufacture is no longer exclusive to the elite. Many ikats are used in rituals connected with rites of passage, and reflect fertility and local cosmological beliefs. Others are for domestic use, local barter or inter-island export. The piece seen here was made using traditional techniques, colours and motifs, although the repetition of the lizard along the length of the cloth is a contemporary innovation. (Text by John T.
