The scene comes from a story called the Romance of Patriarch Yang, which is a fictional adaptation of an account related in the annals of the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127). The Three Roads Junction episode contains the following plot. Jiao Zan has killed Xie Jinwu, Wang Qinruo's son-in-law, and is sentenced to forced labour in exile on Shamen Island. Yang Tingzhao orders Ren Tanghui to secretly protect Jiao Zan. When Jiao arrives at the Three Roads Junction she seeks lodging for the night in a sinister inn. The innkeeper Liu Lihua and his wife intend to harm Jiao Zan, Ren Tanghui hurries to get there. Liu then intends to assasinate Ren. While they struggle in the dark, Liu is finally killed by Ren. |
