Summary: This scene appears in the novel The romance of the three kingdoms. After taking Jieting city, general Sima Yi (179-251 AD) leads his troops to press on to Xicheng city, where only the famous statesman and strategist Zhuge Liang (181-234 AD) and a few soldiers have stayed behind. In despair Zhuge Liang decides to trick Sima Yi by leaving the four gates wide open and standing on top of the city walls calmly playing the lute. Fearing an ambush Sima Yi orders the retreat of his troops and Xicheng city is saved.
