Summary: Bound volume of typescript copies of letters to Butterfield & Swire covering China Navigation Company, House and Taikoo Sugar Refinery routine management and business, including staff problems, in particular the serious embezzlement by the Yokohama [Japan] compradore, the effects of the political situation on Chinese trade (May-Sept 1900) and the formation of the Taikoo Dockyard and Engineering Co (Nov 1900) Other subjects include Conference affairs, Hong Kong and Shanghai affairs and Australian trade problems, including the beginnings of refrigerated transport on the Australia-Manila [Philipines] line (April 1899) and the transfer of John Swire & Sons agency to G S Yuill & Company (Jan 1900). Up to November 1898 the majority of the correspondence was still hand led by John Samuel Swire himself, after his death in December 1898 the London side was taken over by J H Scott.
