Summary: Catalogue of pre-Qing dynasty Chinese artworks from the collection of Ruth Dreyfus (with a small quantity of artworks of Persian, Korean and Thai origin). The Dreyfus collection was sold via John Sparks Ltd, dealer in Chinese art (London) during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Handwritten catalogue compiled by Dreyfus, containing entries for Chinese artworks, listing catalogue number, description, period of origin, and sometimes additional provenance information or exhibition history. Illustrated with black and white or colour photographic prints of artworks. Some prints missing. Some entries include additional loose notes on artworks [removed to separate folder for preservation reasons]. Entries arranged broadly chronologically by period of origin: 'Shang Yin' dynasty; 'Chow' [Zhou] dynasty; 'Han' dynasty; 'Chin Western and Eastern’ dynasty; ‘Six Dynasties period’; ‘Wei’ [Northern Wei] dynasty; ‘Sui’ dynasty; ‘T’ang’ [Tang] dynasty; ’Five dynasties period’, ‘Liao’ dynasty; ‘Sung’ [Song] dynasty; ‘Yuan’ dynasty; ‘Ming’ dynasty, as well as other areas of origin or material type: ‘Persian’, ‘Korean’, ‘Sawankalok’ [Thai]; and ‘Carved and inlaid lacquer’. Comprising: handwritten notes by Ruth Dreyfus on the physical location of thirty-two artworks with entries in the catalogue (undated); handwritten note by Ruth Dreyfus on 'Sōsō-in (nara)' (1931) on reverse-side of a memorandum on meeting times from The Oriental Ceramic Society [in English], note on 'Zodiac' [in English and French] (undated), note 'Buddha (le sage ou Cakya jnoune le solitaire des Cakyas)' [in French] (undated) and note on '5 Cardinal Points' on the reverse of a British Museum colour postcard of a 'Water Pot Enamelled on the Biscuit'; a copy of printed article 'Notes on Chü-Lu Hsien' / by Hin-cheung Lovell, reprinted from 'Oriental Art', Vol. XVI, No. 3, (1970), with note to 'Mrs Dreyfus' from the author; and a black and white photographic print of four Tang period paintings from the Dreyfus collection (Catalogue Nos. 399, 400. 401, 402) on exhibit (alongside fifteen porcelain figurines) at the 'Tang Exhibition 1955'.
