scb_admin_history (capital of Oudh, Mohammedan) In 1878, Elizabeth Bielby opened Lucknow Medical Mission with her sister, Alice. Alice died almost immediately, and Elizabeth fell seriously ill with typhoid fever. (see the Administrative History, Medical care of women and girls re her interview with the Marahani.) In 1881, she came back to England for further training, and returned as a fully qualified doctor to Lahore. The Lucknow Medical Mission was taken up by Dr Grace Mackinnon, who lobbied for new and better buildings. This resulted in the opening of the Lady Kinnaird Memorial Hospital in 1891 on land given by the Government. In 1910, Dr Ethel Douglas took over for the next 36 years. She extended and enlarged the hospital, and raised standards of care and training. This led to the establishment of the North India Board of Examiners and to State Registration Councils. In 1927, Dr Douglas received the Kaiser-i-Hind medal in Gold, and the Provincial Government gave the hospital Rs23,000 for new wards. In 1965 the Lady Kinnaird Memorial Hospital was closed on account of costs; it was taken over by the neurosurgical department of King George Medical College in 1971.
