Notes inside the text give some background to the New Year's Offering, which was linked to the funding of the London Missionary Society mission ships by children. The 'John Williams' ships were regarded as belonging to the children of the Society because of their large share in raising funds for their purchase, but it was not until the New Year's Juvenile Offering was firmly established that the children had any responsibility for their upkeep. The scheme was launched by Rev Robert Robinson (appointed Home Secretary in 1865) in 1868, and specifically linked the children's efforts to the ships. The books appear to have been a reward given in response to fundraising efforts. The story of the early days of the New Year's Offering are told in the Society's 'Juvenile Magazine', extracts of which are included in this volume.
