Admin history: Notes inside the text give some background to the New Year's Offering, which was linked to the funding of the London Missionary Society mission ships by children. The 'John Williams' ships were regarded as belonging to the children of the Society because of their large share in raising funds for their purchase, but it was not until the New Year's Juvenile Offering was firmly established that the children had any responsibility for their upkeep.
