Born 14 Oct 1809 at Newcastle-on-Tyne; studied at Airedale College; appointed to Samoa; ordained, 10 Jul 1839; married Mary Jane Dixon; sailed 3 Aug 1839; arrived at Sydney, 25 Dec, and at Upolu, 30 Mar 1840; being appointed to commence a new station at the east end of Upolu, he settled at Lepa in Jul 1840; at the close of 1849 he left Samoa to visit England; re-embarked for Samoa, 20 Sep 1852, arriving at Sydney, 1 Jan 1853, and Upolu, 25 May; settled at Lalomanu, Sep 1853; in 1857, Mr Harbutt and Mr Drummond were appointed on Deputation to visit the out-stations of the Samoan Mission - embarking at Apia, 27 May, they visited the New Hebrides and Loyalty Groups and Niue and returned to Apia, 6 Aug; in 1858 he returned to England on account of failing health; in 1862 he took a pastorate at Ullesthorpe, Leicestershire, when his connection with the Society ceased; he died at Nottingham, 14 Oct 1866. |
