Encloses sketch of the Mabotsa mission station for the Juvenile Magazine furnished by A. H. Bain, a gentleman who recently visited the area; gives information on a rain maker staying with the Bakhatla [baKgatla], and the general belief in "witchcraft" amongst the people; discussions with the chief and counsellors regarding the rain maker and the power of traditional beliefs; Livingstone offers to become the rain maker's pupil in an attempt to disprove his practices and "undeceive" the people; knowledge of working iron ore held only by a few families, while superstition surrounds the practice; plans to hold lectures on his return to Mabotsa with his new wife [Mary Livingstone] on "the works of God in creation and Providence", and to include a lecture on iron ore in an attempt to break down superstitions.
