Describes journey into the interior of the Bechuana country, leaving on 10 February 1842 and remaining there during the months of March, April, May and part of June; objects of the journey included language acquisition, to be free from all medical work and to undertake evangelistic work by means of "native agents", for which purpose he is accompanied by two indigenous church members; describes route to the valley of the Bakhatla [baKgatla] and visit to 3 villages; describes meeting with Bubi, one of the chiefs of the Bakwain [baKwena], whom he had also visited during the previous year with Mr Edwards, plans for the placement of a "native teacher" there (later abandoned due to fever) and irrigation work; comments that no instructions have yet arrived regarding the intentions of the [LMS] directors in relation to "native agency"; describes next stage of journey Northward to visit the Bamangwato [baNgwato], Bakaa [baKaa] and Makalaka and comments on their language, customs and beliefs; meeting with the chief of the Bamangwato, Sekomi [Sekgoma I, chief of the Bamangwato, 1834?-1875] and the hospitality shown by the people; describes the dangers of lions in the region; describes visit to the Bakaa in more detail, including the landscape and references to Gibson, a white European who had visited the Bakaa in c.1834; return to the country of Bubi and meeting there with people sent by Sebegwe [chief of one half of the Wanketze] stating the wish of their chief to meet with Livingstone; prospects for missions in the Interior; geographical position of Mosilikatsi [Mzilikazi].
