Summary: Journal of James Newell, September - November 1885, describing his voyage in the John Williams to the out stations of the Samoan mission. Islands which he visited included Olsenga [Olosega], Fakaofo and Atafu in the Tokelau group, Nukulaelae, Fanufuti, Vaitupu, Nukufetau, Nui, Nuitao, Nanomea and Nanomanga in the Ellice group [Tuvalu], and Arorae, Nukunau, Peru [Beru], Onotoa and Tamana in the Gilbert group [Kiribati]. At each station he received reports from the native teachers and visited the churches and schools, dealt with matters of church discipline and recorded statistics of the mission stations.
