Journal of James Vivian, April 1871 - January 1872, recording his voyage in the John Williams to many of the Pacific islands before sailing to Sydney. The journal begins by recording the illness of Mrs Vivian in September 1870 which necessitated the voyage. Visits to the following islands are described: in the Cook Islands - Mangaia, Aitutaki, Rarotonga, Mitiaro, Mauke, Atiu, ^Penrhyn (Lagoon Islands), Maniiki, Rakaanga, Bukabuka (Danger Island); in the Navigator group [Samoa] - Upolu, Tutuila, Savaii; in the Tokelau group - Takaofu, Atafu, Quiros [Olosega]; in the Ellice Group [Tuvalu] - Nukulaelae, Funafuti, Vaitupu, Nukufetau, Nui, Nuitao; in the Gilbert Islands (Kingsmill Group)[Kiribati] - Arorae, Tamana, Peru [Beru], Nukunau [Nikunau], Nanumanga, Nanumea, Noatoa [Onoatoa]; in the Loyalty Islands [New Caledonia] - Mare, Lifu and Uea. The journal concludes by noting their date of arrival at Sydney - 6 February 1872. Page 18 is missing. There is a brief covering letter with the journal dated 5 July 1872. The journal has been edited in pencil.
