The journal begins by recording the illness of Mrs Vivian in September 1870 which necessitated the voyage. Visits to the following islands are described: in the Cook Islands - Mangaia, Aitutaki, Rarotonga, Mitiaro, Mauke, Atiu, ^Penrhyn (Lagoon Islands), Maniiki, Rakaanga, Bukabuka (Danger Island); in the Navigator group [Samoa] - Upolu, Tutuila, Savaii; in the Tokelau group - Takaofu, Atafu, Quiros [Olosega]; in the Ellice Group [Tuvalu] - Nukulaelae, Funafuti, Vaitupu, Nukufetau, Nui, Nuitao; in the Gilbert Islands (Kingsmill Group)[Kiribati] - Arorae, Tamana, Peru [Beru], Nukunau [Nikunau], Nanumanga, Nanumea, Noatoa [Onoatoa]; in the Loyalty Islands [New Caledonia] - Mare, Lifu and Uea. The journal concludes by noting their date of arrival at Sydney - 6 February 1872. Page 18 is missing. There is a brief covering letter with the journal dated 5 July 1872. The journal has been edited in pencil.
