Summary: Journal of Archibald Murray, August - October 1861, describing his voyage in the John Williams from Samoa to the New Hebrides [Vanuatu] and Loyalty Islands [New Caledonia]. Calling at Niue, Aneiteum [Anatom], Tanna, Niua, Erromanga [Erromango], Fate [Efate], Api [Epi], Ambryon [Ambrym], Malieolo, Espiritu Santo Mare, Lifu and Uea [Ouvea] to see the native teachers, observe the missions progress and investigate possible sites for new mission stations. He was accompanied by William Lawes and his family, who were to occupy a station at Niue. He also records the epidemics of measles that have occured at many of the islands, and gives an account of the murder of Mr G N Gordon and his wife (Presbyterian missionaries) at Erromanga.
